The female tam-tam
The female tam-tam, whose size symbolizes the home where the population is conceived, metamorphoses, grows, and, much later, emerges to populate the world.
Surface of the small tam-tams
Here, the wide surfaces of these tam-tams symbolize a support that can bear the great burdens of tomorrow; this explains their upright position, unlike the long male tam-tam, which is leaning against the woman on whom the load is being poured or released.
The small tam-tams
The small tam-tams gathered together represent the children of a couple; the two large tam-tams at the start represent the couple themselves. As for the children, there is the eldest, who is larger, down to the youngest, who is smaller. This explains the different sizes.
Male and female tam-tam
Male and female tam-tam. The large tam-tam represents the woman, while the long one represents the man, because in Bamileke society, any man who wants to succeed and be respected must be supported by a woman, who is considered a pillar of society; the size of the female tam-tam symbolizes the womb of the woman, from which all the population of the world emerges.
